HEART & HANDS, Musical Instrument Makers of China is a photographic exploration of the people who make musical instruments throughout China. The goal of the project was to produce a book similar to the one just completed on musical instrument makers of America. The intention is to bring light to the theme of music as the universal language and to rejoice in each unique culture while recognizing the inherent similarities.

We are also producing a documentary video on this subject and a video diary of us doing the project. This will be produced on an audio Compact Disc, DVD, and CD-ROM. The photographs are being reproduced as limited edition Iris prints for exhibition. All editing and print preparation is being done at Jake Jacobson’s Northlight studios. All of the photography, video directing, final editing decisions, final design decisions, choice of subjects and choice of personnel will be done exclusively by Jake Jacobson. All copyrights to all images and interviews will be the exclusive ownership of Jake Jacobson and Northlight of Colorado, Inc .

The book and documentary video will explore, in depth, the musical craftspeople of China. We traveled to the cities and the provinces of China and photographed the people in their workshops, homes, cities, villages, backyards, and interesting surrounding areas. The viewer will see China through the photographic eye of Jake Jacobson and the craftspeople photographed. Although at times we photographed musical performances, the criteria for the subjects is that they must be instrument makers and live in China. Among other opportunities, we photographed street performances of storytellers and puppeteers, symphony halls, music schools and weddings and funerals.

Be sure to look for the public release of our new project in 2002.
